Individual Success at The Overlea

By: Sydney Dymacek

This past weekend, the Saint James Varsity Wrestling Team traveled to The Overlea Invitational, where they showcased their strength and determination in a highly competitive field. Although the team ultimately fell just short of taking home the top prize, finishing in third place, there were plenty of reasons to celebrate. The Saints demonstrated incredible skill and perseverance throughout the event, and seven athletes earned podium finishes, proving that hard work and dedication pay off. Among these, Derek Owumi (6th form), made an unforgettable mark by winning gold for the first time. His victory was a testament to the countless hours of training, discipline, and heart that he’s put into the sport. Alongside Derek’s triumph, Jorge Garrido Urias (4th form), had an outstanding performance, placing for the first time ever. Jorge’s success was a shining example of the team’s future potential.

Although the team did not secure the top spot, the individual accomplishments and the spirit of camaraderie were truly uplifting. Looking ahead, the team is more motivated than ever to continue improving and striving for the gold. Congratulations to all the athletes for their hard work and accomplishments—here’s to bringing home the gold next time.
